Developers could hardly have picked a better situation for A.P.C. Surplus, an outlet that offers deep discounts on the label’s overstock. Right on Grand Street near the river, the store is housed in one of Williamsburg’s coolest buildings. Compared to the neighborhood’s less-attractive vinyl-siding structures, A.P.C’s ornate façade is elegant in a fittingly Parisian way (Beaux Arts flourishes, wrought iron) with a blackened look that tones down its grandeur. Inside, the vibe is straight urban industrial, with vaulted ceilings and streamlined racks. The whole thing is much smaller than its exterior suggests, as much of the multilevel building is reserved for A.P.C. operations. Only one dressing room stands in the corner of the sample-sale-like retail space, so customers queue up to try on the wares. Lines can be especially long on weekend afternoons, after the store’s target demographic finishes with hangover brunch.
