Outer Critics contenders
'Young Frankenstein' scares up 10 nominations
For theater people, springtime in New York means one thing: award season. With the big-time Tonys right around the corner, this year's Outer Critics Circle Award nominees lineup is crucial, as it's often a pretty decent indicator of who will take home the big prize come June (though it's safe to assume several contenders pretend to not care about that).

The nominees, which were announced at the Algonquin Hotel on April 21, are oddly led by the Mel Brooks musical comedy "Young Frankenstein," with 10 nominations, while the revival of "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" earned nine apiece and the revival of "South Pacific," eight.

"Glory Days," which has been garnering lots of buzz as the next big "modern" musical in the realm of "Spring Awakening" and "Passing Strange" was the only Broadway production the nominating committee was unable to attend prior to the nominations cut-off date. The new musical will therefore be considered for next year's awards.

The Outer Critics Circle Awards honor both Broadway and Off-Broadway and are decided by a group of writers "covering New York theatre for out-of town newspapers, national publications and other media beyond Broadway."
