2008 Tony Award Winners
Not a dull moment to be found at Radio City...
Few things are more exciting to theater fans than the Tony Awards, celebrating the best of New York theater. This year's ceremony was no exception as tight races, invigorating performances and a livelier-than-usual crowd took center stage.
Interestingly, there weren't any major upsets or surprises, but considering this year’s list of nominees, predictability was a good thing: The front-runners–turned–winners all deserved to take home their statues.
Some of the night's highlights included the original cast of "Rent" singing alongside the current cast to commemorate the show’s 12-year run that will end in September; Best Actress winner Patti LuPone's spectacular performance of "Everything's Coming Up Roses" from "Gypsy," for which she received a lengthy standing ovation; and the rousing live ensemble number from Best Musical winner "In the Heights."
Here’s a look at the night’s big winners and who they were up against in the race for Tony. — Perrie Samotin
