Our top picks, from best-kept secret musical to biggest prima donna
Election years provide great free theater with those improbable entertainers, the Democratic and Republican Parties, but this year on Broadway, neither quality nor critical acclaim could guarantee audiences: some superb shows withered (“Top Girls”) while others soared (“The Seagull”). So instead of a top ten list, we’ve created our own categories. Call it a highlight reel of 2008:
First up: Best Sex
Three words that shouldn't be put together: British sex farce. But somehow, “Boeing-Boeing” tickled American audiences till our bellies ached. With Bradley Whitford maneuvering three stewardesses through his bachelor pad, it could've been like an episode of “Three's Company”. Instead, breakneck pacing and a pair of perfect perfs from sidekicks Mark Rylance and Christine Baranski made this titillating pleasure into the season's sleeper success.
