The friskiest

TV’s most arresting females

July 19, 2007

The show: “The Mod Squad”

On duty: Detective Julie Barnes (Peggy Lipton)

M.O.: This show captured the feel of the late-‘60s counter-culture and Barnes was its poster girl. While she left much of the physical stuff to the men, Barnes’ talent lied in making the most complicated clues deadly plain. She was an inspiration for American girls who thought they could be just like her. Fat chance! No one wore a bikini better, slouched sexier or pushed their hair away cooler than Julie Barnes.

The show:
“Cold Case”

On duty: Detective Lily Rush (Kathryn Morris)

M.O.: Detective Rush uses every tool at her disposal: Her natural intuition, the latest in forensic technology and, of course, well-placed slamming on tables during interrogations. Rush’s job is to close cases that have gone unresolved for years and she takes them personally. Raised poor and by an alcoholic mother, Rush has just the kind of dysfunction that makes her the perfect hard-hitting yet empathetic lady cop we love to watch.

The show:
“Cagney & Lacey”

On duty: Detective Christine Cagney (Sharon Gless) and Detective Mary Beth Lacey (Tyne Daly)

M.O.: Cagney and Lacey were the most controversial arresting females in TV history. The norm (even today) is to match female cops with male counterparts, but the opposing lifestyles of these ladies served up enough friction to make men obsolete. Cagney was single and career-driven, while Lacey was a married, working mother. They dealt with many issues women cared about, such as abortion, rape and pregnancy. But what about the horrific outfits? Hello, it was the ’80s!

SO GOOD, I'VE GOTTA READ IT AGAIN—BACK TO PAGE 1 PLEASE!
