Check out the week's new releases in our latest installment of... TV on DVD!
Show: Keeping Up with the Kardashians: Season Two (Lionsgate)
Format: DVD.
What is it? Okay, this isn't going to help you if you're trying to decide whether or not to buy this DVD, which presents the second season of this guilty pleasure reality show, but is it just me, or when you hear “Kardashians,” do you think of the Cardassians from "Star Trek"? Sure, they're not spelled the same, and Cardassians weren't know for their fine... assets, but they still sound enough alike that I find it odd that "Robot Chicken" hasn't done a sketch called “Keeping Up with the Cardassians.” Unless, of course, they think that would just be too obvious. Though the idea of Gul Dukat and Bruce Jenner bonding over a glass of hot fish juice seems like comic gold to me.
Number of discs/episodes: 1 disc/11 episodes.
Extras: Deleted scenes; Robert Kardashian, Jr.'s video blog.
Price: $19.98.
Buy, borrow or ignore: Borrow.
Show: J.A.G.: The Ninth Season (CBS/Paramount)
Format: DVD
What is it? Somewhere, David James Elliot, Catherine Bell and the rest of the cast of this military mystery show are wondering, “What the fudge cake?” Though their show posted respectable numbers for ten years, they were always the Rodney Dangerfield of procedural drama: no respect, no respect at all. And don't give me the “nobody knows what a Judge Advocate General is” nonsense. No one knew what a Crime Scene Investigator was either when that show started in 2000, and it hasn't hurt one bit. Not that the cast ever let it get them down, as you can see in these episodes, which are just as spirited as the ones that came years earlier, but you know that somewhere they're sitting around, talking about cake.
Number of discs/episodes: 5 discs/23 episodes.
Extras: None.
Price: $64.99.
Buy, borrow or ignore: Borrow.
Show: Sesame Street: 40 Years of Sunny Days (Genius/Sesame Workshop)
Format: DVD
What is it? Though it's suppose to be as educational as it is entertaining, there was one thing that this show never taught me: how the frak do I get to Sesame Street? I tried Google maps, I tried Mapquest, I even asked a cop, who arrested me and sent me to Bellevue for psychiatric evaluation. Thankfully, I can just stay home with this collection, which chronicles this show's four decades on the air. Besides including such classic bits as Ernie singing “Rubber Duckie,” this also includes a limited edition commemorative book and an interview with the voice star behind Elmo.
Number of discs: 2 discs.
Extras: Interviews with writer, director, producer John Stone, puppeteer Caroll Spinney and the voice of Elmo, Kevin Clash; behind-the-scenes rehearsal footage; trivia and pop-up fun fact.
Price: $23.93.
Buy, borrow or ignore: Buy…or Elmo will cut you.
