Pittsburgh is already known as a cold, cold place, but it only got colder in 1970 when the Steelers discontinued their cheerleading program. Art Rooney Sr., the founding owner of Pittsburgh’s NFL team, viewed young women with pom-poms as an unnecessary distraction to the game. That being said, the girls did have a 10-year run in the ‘60s. The Steelerettes, we imagine, are missed most on dark December Sundays.
